About the Lean Body Mass Calculator
This lean body mass (LBM) calculator computes the weight of all non-fat tissue in your body — muscle, bone, organs, blood, water, and skin — from your total weight and body fat percentage. Enter your weight and body fat percentage, and the tool returns your lean body mass, fat mass, lean-to-fat ratio, and a body composition category.
Lean body mass is the metabolically active component of your body — the tissue that burns calories, supports movement, and maintains organ function. It is more meaningful than total body weight for tracking fitness progress, because muscle gain and fat loss can occur simultaneously without changing the scale. Two people at 75 kg can have very different body composition: one at 10% body fat has 67.5 kg of LBM and 7.5 kg of fat; another at 30% body fat has 52.5 kg of LBM and 22.5 kg of fat.
LBM is also used in clinical settings for medication dosing (some drugs are dosed based on lean mass rather than total weight), for nutrition planning (protein requirements scale with LBM, not total weight), and for evaluating metabolic health (BMR is more closely tied to LBM than to total weight).
How It Works
The LBM formula:

The body composition categories used (for men): lean <15% body fat, average 15-25%, above average 25-32%, high >32%. For women, the categories shift up by about 7-10 percentage points due to essential fat differences.
Worked Examples
For a 75 kg male at 18% body fat:
- LBM = 75 * (1 - 0.18) = 75 * 0.82 = 61.5 kg
- Fat Mass = 75 * 0.18 = 13.5 kg
- Lean-to-Fat Ratio = 61.5 / 13.5 = 4.6:1
- In pounds: 61.5 * 2.20462 = 135.6 lb LBM

For a 60 kg female at 28% body fat:
- LBM = 60 * (1 - 0.28) = 60 * 0.72 = 43.2 kg
- Fat Mass = 60 * 0.28 = 16.8 kg

For a 80 kg athlete at 8% body fat:
- LBM = 80 * (1 - 0.08) = 80 * 0.92 = 73.6 kg

To calculate target weight at a desired body fat percentage: Target Weight = Current LBM / (1 - Target Body Fat %). If you have 60 kg LBM and want 12% body fat, your target weight is 60 / 0.88 = 68.2 kg.
Limitations & Disclaimer
This calculator computes lean body mass by subtracting estimated fat mass from total weight — the result is only as accurate as the body fat percentage input. If your body fat estimate is wrong by 3 percentage points, your LBM will be wrong by about 2-3 kg. The calculator does not differentiate between muscle mass, bone mass, organ mass, or water content — all of which are components of LBM. It does not account for hydration status (dehydration reduces LBM measurement), glycogen stores (each gram of glycogen binds 3-4 g of water, which can shift LBM by 1-2 kg), or menstrual cycle phase (which affects water retention in women). The body composition categories are general guidelines and individual healthy ranges vary by age, sex, and athletic goals. What is the difference between lean body mass and muscle mass?
Lean body mass includes muscle, bone, organs, blood, water, and skin — everything that isn't fat. Muscle mass is approximately 40-50% of LBM in healthy adults. The other 50-60% is bone (15%), organs (20%), blood (7%), skin (5%), and other tissues. To measure muscle mass specifically, you need a DEXA scan with muscle segmentation.
What is a good lean-to-fat ratio?
For men, 4:1 to 9:1 is typical (corresponding to 10-20% body fat). Athletic men may reach 9:1 to 19:1 (5-10% body fat). For women, 2.5:1 to 4.5:1 is typical (18-28% body fat), with athletic women at 4.5:1 to 7:1 (12-18%). Below the typical range indicates high body fat; above indicates very lean. How do I increase my lean body mass?

Is LBM the same as fat-free mass?
Nearly. Fat-free mass (FFM) excludes all fat, including essential fat (the fat in cell membranes, brain tissue, bone marrow). Lean body mass (LBM) includes essential fat. The difference is small — about 2-3% of body weight. In practice, LBM and FFM are used interchangeably in fitness and nutrition contexts.
How accurate is the LBM calculation if my body fat estimate is wrong?
The LBM calculation is only as accurate as your body fat estimate. If your body fat is off by 3 percentage points (e.g., you estimate 15% but actual is 18%), your LBM will be off by about 2.25 kg for a 75 kg person. This is why accurate body fat measurement (DEXA, hydrostatic weighing, Bod Pod) matters for clinical and athletic use.
Can I use this for medication dosing?
Some medications (certain chemotherapy drugs, anesthetics) are dosed based on lean body mass rather than total body weight, especially for obese patients where total weight overestimates required dose. However, clinical dosing typically uses a more precise LBM calculation (James or Boer formulas) than this simple subtraction.
