About the BMI Calculator
Body Mass Index (BMI) relates body weight to height squared and is the most widely deployed anthropometric screening tool in adult medicine. Developed by Belgian astronomer Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s and renamed BMI by physiologist Ancel Keys in a 1972 Journal of Chronic Diseases paper, it produces a single number used to flag potential underweight or overweight status in adults aged 20 and older.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is explicit that BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic of body fatness (https://www.cdc.gov/bmi/about/index.html). A high BMI warrants further assessment — skinfold calipers, DEXA, bioelectrical impedance, or waist circumference — rather than a clinical diagnosis of adiposity. The World Health Organization (WHO) adopted the current adult cut-points in its 1995, 2000, and 2004 technical reports.
These thresholds apply only to adults ≥20 years. Children and adolescents (ages 2-19) use BMI-for-age percentiles plotted on CDC growth charts, because body composition shifts through puberty. A BMI of 22 can sit at the 50th percentile for a 30-year-old man but at the 85th percentile for an 11-year-old boy.
This tool accepts metric (kg, cm) and imperial (lb, in) inputs and applies the appropriate formula. All computation runs client-side; no inputs leave the browser.
How It Works
The metric and imperial formulas are mathematically equivalent:
Metric: BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)²
Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight(lb) / height(in)²
The constant 703 converts pounds-and-inches to kilograms-and-metres internally; it derives from 0.453592 kg/lb × (100 cm/m)² × (1 in/2.54 cm)². Either formula yields the same BMI to within rounding.
The WHO adult classification, in use since 1997, is:
- Underweight: BMI < 18.5
- Normal weight: 18.5 - 24.9
- Overweight: 25.0 - 29.9
- Obese Class I: 30.0 - 34.9
- Obese Class II: 35.0 - 39.9
- Obese Class III: ≥ 40.0
The healthy weight range for any height is computed by multiplying 18.5 and 24.9 by the square of height in metres. For 1.75 m this gives 56.7 - 76.3 kg.
Worked Examples
A 70 kg adult at 1.75 m has BMI 70 / 1.75² = 70 / 3.0625 = 22.86 — Normal weight. The healthy range at that height is 18.5 × 3.0625 = 56.7 kg up to 24.9 × 3.0625 = 76.3 kg.
An adult weighing 180 lb at 5′10″ (70 in) has BMI 703 × 180 / 70² = 126,540 / 4,900 = 25.82 — just inside the Overweight band. Crossing into Normal weight at that height requires dropping below 174 lb, about 6 lb away at a sustainable 500 kcal/day deficit over 6 weeks.
A 1.60 m adult at 80 kg has BMI 80 / 2.56 = 31.25 — Obese Class I. The healthy range is 47.4 - 63.9 kg, a 16-33 kg gap that warrants clinical follow-up.
BMI does not separate muscle from fat: a 100 kg rugby prop at 1.85 m has BMI 29.2 (Overweight) but body fat often below 15%. Always pair BMI with waist circumference or body-fat percentage when interpreting for an athletic individual.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does BMI distinguish muscle from fat?
No. A 100 kg bodybuilder at 8% body fat and a 100 kg sedentary adult at 30% body fat share the same BMI. The CDC explicitly notes this limitation. For muscular individuals, body-fat percentage via DEXA or the U.S. Navy method is more informative.
Why does the CDC use different charts for children?
Children’s body composition changes through puberty, so a single BMI threshold does not work for ages 2-19. The CDC publishes BMI-for-age percentile charts where the 85th-94th percentile is overweight and ≥95th percentile is obesity.
Is BMI accurate for older adults?
BMI tends to underestimate adiposity in adults over 65 because muscle mass declines with age (sarcopenia). Some researchers propose higher “healthy” ranges (up to 27) for adults over 65, but WHO has not adopted age-specific thresholds.
Does BMI apply during pregnancy?
No. Pregnancy weight gain is evaluated against the 2009 IOM guidelines (see our Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator). Pre-pregnancy BMI is used to set the recommended gain range; current BMI during pregnancy is not meaningful because fetal and amniotic weight distort it.
Are there ethnic differences in BMI risk?
Yes. WHO and the International Diabetes Federation note that Asian populations face cardiometabolic risk at lower BMI. Some Asian health authorities use ≥23 as overweight and ≥25 as obesity, but WHO has not formally lowered its global cut-points.
What BMI is needed for bariatric surgery?
NIH NIDDK criteria require BMI ≥ 40, or ≥ 35 with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, or severe arthritis. Most insurers follow these criteria. Lower thresholds (≥ 30 with diabetes) apply in some countries.
