About the Body Fat Calculator

This body fat calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method to estimate body fat percentage from height and circumference measurements at the neck, waist, and (for women) hip. Enter your gender, height, and the three measurements (taken with a soft tape measure at standard anatomical points), and the tool returns your body fat percentage along with a fitness category based on American Council on Exercise (ACE) guidelines.

The U.S. Navy method, developed in the 1980s from data on U.S. Navy personnel, is one of the most accessible and accurate body-composition estimation methods for home use. It requires only a tape measure (no calipers, scales, or lab equipment) and correlates well with hydrostatic weighing (the gold standard) at r ≈ 0.85-0.90 in healthy adults. The standard error is about 3-4 percentage points.

Body fat percentage is a more meaningful health indicator than BMI for many individuals, because it directly measures fat vs lean mass. Two people with identical BMI can have very different body fat percentages — a sedentary 25 BMI male might have 25% body fat, while a muscular 25 BMI athlete might have 12%. ACE fitness categories range from 'essential' (lowest survivable) to 'obese' (highest health risk).

How It Works

The U.S. Navy body fat formulas, developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center (1984):

Men: BF% = 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 * log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 * log10(height)) - 450; Women: BF% = 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 * log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 * log10(height)) - 450

All measurements are in centimeters. The constants 495 and 450 convert body density (g/cm³) to body fat percentage using the Siri equation: BF% = (495 / density) - 450. The Navy equations estimate body density from circumferences, then convert to fat percentage.

ACE fitness categories:

  • Essential fat: Men <6%, Women <14% (lowest survivable, do not target this)
  • Athletic: Men 6-13%, Women 14-20%
  • Fitness: Men 14-17%, Women 21-24%
  • Average: Men 18-24%, Women 25-31%
  • Obese: Men ≥25%, Women ≥32%

The formulas use log10 (common logarithm) of circumference ratios because fat distribution follows a non-linear relationship with these measurements. The waist-to-neck ratio (men) and waist-plus-hip-to-neck ratio (women) reflect the accumulation of fat in the abdominal and hip regions.

Worked Examples

For a male, 175 cm tall, neck 38 cm, waist 82 cm:

  1. waist - neck = 82 - 38 = 44 cm
  2. log10(44) = 1.6435
  3. log10(175) = 2.2430
  4. Denominator: 1.0324 - 0.19077 * 1.6435 + 0.15456 * 2.2430
  5. = 1.0324 - 0.3135 + 0.3465 = 1.0654
  6. Density: 495 / 1.0654 = 4.4645... wait, this is BF% calculation directly:
  7. BF% = 495/1.0654 - 450 = 464.6 - 450 = 14.6%

For a female, 165 cm tall, neck 34 cm, waist 70 cm, hip 95 cm:

  1. waist + hip - neck = 70 + 95 - 34 = 131
  2. log10(131) = 2.1173, log10(165) = 2.2175
  3. Denominator: 1.29579 - 0.35004 * 2.1173 + 0.22100 * 2.2175
  4. = 1.29579 - 0.74112 + 0.49007 = 1.04474
  5. BF% = 495 / 1.04474 - 450 = 473.8 - 450 = 23.8%

When to Use This Tool

Use this body fat calculator when:

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the U.S. Navy method?

The standard error is about 3-4 percentage points compared to hydrostatic weighing (gold standard). For a 20% body fat estimate, the actual value may be 16-24%. It is more accurate than bioelectrical impedance scales (which can vary by 5-8% based on hydration) but less accurate than DEXA or hydrostatic weighing. For consistent tracking, measure at the same time of day with consistent hydration.

Where do I measure neck, waist, and hip?

Neck: just below the larynx (Adam's apple), keeping the tape horizontal. Waist: at the navel (belly button) for men, at the narrowest point above the navel for women. Hip: at the widest point of the buttocks (women only). Measure with a soft, non-stretchable tape, exhaling normally, with the tape snug but not compressing the skin.

Why does the formula differ for men and women?

Women store fat differently than men &mdash; more in the hips and thighs (gynoid pattern) rather than the abdomen (android pattern). The women's formula includes hip circumference to capture this distribution. Men carry most body fat in the abdomen, so waist and neck suffice for them.

Is the U.S. Navy method accurate for athletes?

Moderately. For very lean athletes (under 10% body fat), the formula may underestimate by 2-3 percentage points. For muscular individuals, the formula tends to be more accurate than BMI because it does not penalize muscle mass. For obese individuals (above 35% body fat), the formula may overestimate. DEXA remains the gold standard for athletic assessment.

What is essential body fat and why shouldn't I target it?

Essential fat is the minimum required for normal physiological function (hormone production, cell membranes, organ protection, nerve conduction). Men need at least 2-5% body fat; women need 10-13% (additional essential fat for breast and reproductive tissue). Targeting below essential fat causes hormonal disruption, amenorrhea in women, immune suppression, and bone loss. Aim for athletic or fitness ranges, not essential.

How does this compare to skinfold calipers?

Skinfold calipers (Jackson-Pollock method) measure subcutaneous fat at 3-7 sites. When performed by an experienced technician, calipers are slightly more accurate than the Navy method (standard error ~2.5% vs 3-4%). Calipers require training to use correctly; the Navy method requires only a tape measure and is more reproducible for home use. Both are less accurate than DEXA or hydrostatic weighing.
