About the Body Fat Calculator
The U.S. Navy body-composition method, developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984 (NHRC Reports 84-11 for men and 84-29 for women), estimates body-fat percentage from circumference measurements taken at the neck, waist (and hip for women) with a standard tape. It is the official DoD body-composition screening method and is widely used by military, police, and fire services worldwide.
The Navy method is popular because it requires only a $5 tape measure and produces results within 3-4% of DEXA when measurements are taken correctly. The equations were derived from a regression against hydrostatic (underwater) weighing — the gold standard at the time — in a sample of 602 Navy personnel. Per the original NHRC reports, all measurements are taken in inches; metric inputs are converted internally before the formula is applied.
The method’s chief weakness is measurement error: a 1 cm error in waist or neck circumference shifts the body-fat estimate by ~1.5%. Take three measurements and use the average, with the tape held snugly but not compressing skin, at the end of a normal exhale. Measure waist at the navel (men) or narrowest point (women); neck just below the larynx.
How It Works
The Hodgdon-Beckett equations (measurements in inches; metric inputs are converted at 2.54 cm/in before applying):
Men: BF% = 86.010 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
Women: BF% = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387
The men’s formula captures abdominal adiposity via waist-minus-neck (a positive quantity). The women’s formula adds hip circumference because women store more fat in the gluteofemoral depot. Both formulas normalise by height (log10) so the percentage is comparable across heights.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) body-fat categories used in fitness settings:
- Men: Essential <6%, Athletic 6-13%, Fitness 14-17%, Average 18-24%, Obese ≥25%
- Women: Essential <14%, Athletic 14-20%, Fitness 21-24%, Average 25-31%, Obese ≥32%
Women’s essential fat is higher because of breast tissue and sex-specific fat depots required for reproductive function (gonadal and gluteofemoral).
Worked Examples
A 30-year-old man, 178 cm (70.1 in), waist 80 cm (31.5 in), neck 38 cm (15.0 in):
waist - neck = 16.5 in
log10(16.5) = 1.2175; log10(70.1) = 1.8457
BF% = 86.010 × 1.2175 - 70.041 × 1.8457 + 36.76
= 104.72 - 129.27 + 36.76 = 12.2% (Athletic band)
A 35-year-old woman, 165 cm (65.0 in), waist 70 cm (27.6 in), hip 98 cm (38.6 in), neck 33 cm (13.0 in):
waist + hip - neck = 53.2 in
log10(53.2) = 1.7259; log10(65.0) = 1.8129
BF% = 163.205 × 1.7259 - 97.684 × 1.8129 - 78.387
= 281.68 - 177.04 - 78.39 = 26.3% (Average band)
The same woman with a 90 cm waist (~35.4 in) would yield ~33% (Obese), showing the formula’s sensitivity to abdominal measurement. Take three measurements and average them.
A fit male CrossFit athlete at 178 cm, 75 cm waist, 38 cm neck measures 8.5% (Athletic) — reasonable for 5×/week training. Track trends month-to-month.
