The Pizza Calculator figures out how many pizzas to order for a group. Enter the number of people, the slices-per-person appetite, the number of slices per pizza (which depends on the pizza size), and the price per pizza — the tool returns the number of pizzas to order, the total cost, the cost per person, and an estimate of leftover slices.
The standard pizza sizes and slice counts are: small (10 inches, 6 slices), medium (12 inches, 8 slices), large (14 inches, 10 slices), and extra-large (16 inches, 12 slices). These are the conventional US cut counts — Italian pizzerias may cut differently (often 4 slices for a 12-inch Neapolitan pie).
For adults, 3 slices per person is the conventional estimate for a meal where pizza is the main food. For parties with snacks, sides, or dessert, 2 slices per person is enough. How It Works
The calculator first multiplies the number of people by the slices-per-person setting to get the total slices needed. It then divides by the slices per pizza and rounds up with Math.ceil() to get the number of pizzas to order.
The total slices provided is pizzas * slices_per_pizza, and the leftover slices is the difference between that and the slices needed. The leftover-pizzas equivalent row shows the leftover slices expressed as a fractional pizza, useful for understanding the magnitude.
The cost calculations are simple: total cost is pizzas * price_per_pizza, cost per person is total cost divided by the number of people, and cost per slice is total cost divided by total slices.
The pizza area calculation uses pi * (diameter/2)^2. For a 12-inch pizza: pi * 6^2 = 113.1 sq in. The total pizza area across all ordered pies is divided by the number of people to give the pizza area per person — useful for comparing the value of different pizza sizes.
Edge cases: zero or negative people is rejected. A slices-per-person value above 10 is rejected (likely a typo). The pizza size dropdown drives the slices-per-pizza value, so you cannot accidentally configure an impossible combination like ‘5 slices per 14-inch pizza’.
